Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt to have Implants fitted?
No, as you will be completely numb, just like if you were having a filling.

Is it sore afterwards?
Mildly. Some patients experience a little soreness and swelling the day after the Implants have been placed, but this should only last 24 hours.

How many Implants will I need?
Each case is different, but usually you’ll need 2 Implants for the lower jaw and 4 Implants for the upper jaw.

How long does it take to fit Implants?
It depends on the complexity of the case, but 1 to 2 hours maximum – the average is about 1 hour.

How long will I be in hospital after my operation?
The good news is, you don’t need to go to hospital. Nowadays, Implants are so simple to fit, we can carry out the procedure in our own surgery in Topsham, near Exeter.

I feel nervous!
No need to feel nervous, you are in safe hands! We are highly experienced and have fitted many Implants over time. It is a relatively simple procedure. We adopt a gentle approach, going at a pace that’s comfortable to you.

How long does it take to make my new Dentures?
The process takes 3 to 4 weeks, from start to finish and we make your Denture in our own dental laboratory in Exmouth here in Devon.

How long will I be without my Dentures?
Apart from the first 24 yours, you will not be without Dentures, as you can wear your old ones (which we will have adjusted for you) until the gums settle and the new Dentures are ready.

How many visits will I have to make?

  • For Dentures: approx 5 visits.
  • For Implants: 3 visits – the initial consultation (including x-rays), the second for the Implants to be fitted, the third to remove the stitches.

How long do Dentures last?
Usually, 8 to 10 years but we recommend an annual check for unusual wear to prolong their life.

How long do Implants last?
We guarantee Implants for 5 years, but they should last a lifetime if looked after correctly.

Do I have to take my Denture out at night?
Ideally, yes. However, if you follow a good oral hygiene routine and you have the agreement of your Dentist or Clinical Dental Technician, it can be acceptable to wear them at night in certain circumstances.

Do I have to take my Implants out at night?
No, Implants are fitted in place, providing something fixed for the Denture to hold on to.

What happens if an Implant fails or my Implant-Retained Denture fractures?
Dental Implant treatment outcomes cannot be guaranteed. We do, however, undertake to replace free-of-charge within the first 5 years after placement any Implant fixture we have fitted, in the unlikely event that it fails to integrate in the jaw bone. We also undertake to replace free-of-charge any Denture we have fitted to an Implant fixture provided by us that fractures within 12 months of being fitted. These are not money-back guarantees and do not cover trauma or neglect. These undertakings are subject to your compliance with the highest standards of home care and oral hygiene and regular attendance for check-ups and reviews, including having the Implants cleaned every 3 months at a hygiene appointment, for which there is a reduced charge of £25 per appointment for Devon Denture Implants patients, and, if relevant, stopping smoking. Failure to do so will render our undertakings void.

What’s the first step if I think I might be interested?
Call us on 01392 877494 to book an initial Implant Consultation with Dr Grant, who will carry out a thorough examination to check your suitability for treatment. This will involve taking x-rays of the upper or lower jaw to check the available bone and to ensure there is no hidden infection or pathology. Impressions and photographs will also be taken. During the consultation, Dr Grant will also chat through with you the difference between Implant-Retained Dentures (also sometimes called ‘Implant Dentures’ or ‘Overdentures’) and ‘normal’ Dentures, the advantages of Implant-Retained Dentures, what’s involved, the likely costs and also answer any questions you may have.

How much do Implant-Retained Dentures cost?

  • Lower Denture inc Implants: £4500* (£3500 for 2 Implants + £1000 for the Denture)
  • Upper Denture inc Implants: £7900* (£6600 for 4 Implants + £1300 for the Denture)

If you consider that denture fixative can cost you £10 a week – £520 a year – Denture Implants could save you money in the long run, not to mention the mess and hassle.
